Heinrich Schütz Konservatorium Dresden

The orientation level at the Heinrich Schütz Konservatorium helps children (from pre-school to approx. 2nd grade) who are keen to make music, but cannot yet decide on an instrument, given the vast array on offer. It gives them an opportunity to become familiar with the various possibilities of music-making. Under the supervision of an expert, the children try out different instruments on an ‘instrument carousel’ as a way of finding their favourite one.

Depending on the course day chosen, the following ‘sampler options’ are available:

• Bassoon and brass instruments

Registration for the Orientation Course//Instrumentenkarussell (pre-school to approx. 2nd grade) is only possible if your child has taken part in "Early Music Education II". In addition, the high demand for the Orientation Course/Instrument Carousel currently leads to long waiting times, so that we may only be able to consider your registration for the school year 2025/2026. Our ‘MusikSchützen Dresden’ programme is aimed at pre-school and primary school children in Dresden. In a way that is appropriate for their age, they embark on a journey of musical discovery and learn about sounds and melodies through play. ‘MusikSchützen Dresden’ enables children to discover their personal strengths, try out instruments and learn to play them.

For pre-schoolers, the ‘MusikSchützen’ sessions take place in the familiar surroundings of the nursery. The young participants can familiarise themselves with various instruments – and, in subsequent years, learn to play an instrument at the partner primary schools (the choice of instrument is made by the primary school).

The programme is free of charge for pre-schoolers and Year 1 pupils (subject to funding, including from GTA funds), which enables children to access musical education regardless of their social background. From Year 2 onwards, pupils receive lessons for a small fee.

Through the ‘MusikSchützen Dresden’ programme, we aim to improve access to music education across the city of Dresden and to support the children’s individual development. In the 2025/2026 school year, around 900 children will be taking part in the ‘MusikSchützen Dresden’ programme.
